Father Pinto’s tombstone at Concordia

Father Carlos M. Pinto, SJ tombstone at Concordia

When you walk into the beautiful plaza located in Sacred Heart Church, you will encounter a stoic bronze figure overlooking the brick courtyard. The life-sized sculpture created by artist Gary Mark, depicts no other than Father Carlos M. Pinto. S. J. Father Pinto would be responsible for founding the iconic Segundo Barrio church, Sacred Heart Church, and its corresponding parish school. Carlos Pinto was born in 1841 in Salerno, Italy, to a privileged family. Pinto showed promise from an early age, joining the Society of Jesus at the age 14. During his time in El Paso, he would oversee the construction of fourteenth churches, including St. Ignatius, which served the community of South El Paso, thus setting the longstanding foundation for the catholic church in El Paso, Texas. Father Pinto’s final resting place is in the Concordia Cemetery.
